Giants Webster: 'It's a Fresh Start For Me'
Webster was considered a very good press corner at LSU. In fact, it was one of the very reason the Giants drafted him in the first place. Unfortunately when Tim Lewis took over that was thrown out the window. Lewis tried to force Webster into being a Cover-2 corner, something he just couldn't do. Eventually it led to Lewis tearing Webster apart publicly and any remaining confidence Webster had being totally shot. Now, with Lewis out of the picture, Corey will get another chance.
"Hopefully, it'll be a fresh start for me," cornerback Corey Webster said Tuesday. "It's a chance to really show what I can do ... Sometimes [the past two years], I got mixed signals. I didn't really know what the coaching staff was asking for. It's never a good thing when a player and the coach aren't on the same page. We're all here to win."I've been very critical of Webster to date, but in all fairness he had been used incorrectly. The Giants have shown their confidence in him and will give him another chance to prove his worth with new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

3. I have to agree with you on this one. Play calling offensively was horrible, but defensively we needed the most work. The Giants couldn't get any team off the field on 3rd down, even 3rd and long. I'm really hoping Demps plays better than last year. He was the WORST safety in the league. By the way, who is this Mitchell guy that we signed? I haven't heard of him, but I can't remember any KC linebacker that was worth anything. Any input?

4. Let's get the 4-12 year over with this year.. We can then watch Coughlin get thrown under the bus... We can then hire a real coach & become a team again.. I
haven't seen a coach & staff so bad since Rich Kotite left the jets... I totally agree with the first comments , Shockey is a total monster with Coughlin nitpicking his blocking... Come on...

1. Corey Webster, along with Eli Manning and Jeremy Shockey, are shining examples of how bad coaching or being surrounded by inferior talent can ruin good players. Webster was an excellent cover corner in the SEC in college. That means, folks, he was shutting down a good number of receivers who are now in the NFL. Then he comes to the Giants, with excellent size and speed, and has to play Cover-2 because Tim Lewis was committed to it both for good reasons (to cover for lack of speed in the defensive backfield and linebackers) and bad (because it is the "defense de jour" in the NFL and Lewis was hoping to ride it to a head coaching job). So now we'll get to see how he does when he is given a chance to join Gibril Wilson as the core of what will be a largely young defensive backfield that should mature in a year or two when sprinkled with good draft picks and a few free agency pickups.
The 2006 offensive scheme (too much passing and from very predictable offensive situations and sets) put way too much pressure on a young quarterback and took Shockey out of the "danger zone" for the defense way too often (so he could block inside). I guarantee that if Roethlisberger or Rivers had to play out of that scheme they would have people howling at them just like the fans at the Meadowlands who have given up on Eli. Over the next two years, with decent coaching (not at all a given) the team will refocus on the run, make use of Eli's great play action moves, and see the offense improve considerably. But it is the defense that needs serious attention. Get young, get athletic, get tough, and create a scheme that fits your personnel. Thank goodness Tim Lewis is history. And pray for a great draft.
